2013 Position Breakdown: Defensive line

Defensive line: 2012 review, grade and 2013 season preview
Florida State finished 2012 with the No. 2 total defense in the country, giving up an average of just 254.14 yards of total offense per game.

Cornellius Carradine lead all defensive linemen with 80 tackles, good for second on the team. He also had 11 sacks.

Bjoern Werner was dominant again with a team-high 13 sacks and 18 tackles for loss.

Timmy Jernigan led all defensive tackles with 46 stops, including eight tackles for loss.

Starting defensive tackles Everett Dawkins and Anthony McCloud were solid with 26 tackles for Dawkins and 24 for McCloud.

Opponents averaged just 92.29 yards per game rushing against FSU in 2013, which ranks third best in the country. Opposing running backs averaged just 2.75 yards per carry. The defensive line was a big reason for that. Against the pass FSU's defensive linemen racked up 33 of FSU's 36 sacks. Only 13 teams in the country had more sacks than FSU. On the edge Carradine made sure that FSU didn't loss production when it lost Brandon Jenkins for the year in the first game.

No segment loses more than the defensive line in 2013 with Bjoern Werner, Brandon Jenkins, Tank Carradine, Everett Dawkins and Amp McCloud all gone. The good news is the cupboard isn't exactly bare. Mario Edwards Jr. got his feet wet last year and came on strong at the end of the year. Chris Casher and Giorgio Newberry will be in line for playing time on the other side. Early enrollee and Under Armour All-American Demarcus Walker will push for time, as will JUCO signee Desmond Hollin. In the middle Timmy Jernigan returns and Demonte McAllister had a big year last season with 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Jacobbi McDaniel, Eddie Goldman, Niles Lawrence-Stample and Justin Shanks will proved plenty of depth at the defensive tackle spot. The move back to defensive end seems like a natural one for Dan Hicks who will also help fill the void of the NFL-bound veterans.
