Q&A: WR commit Obasi talks UVa official, signing plans, and more

We caught up with three-star Baltimore (MD) Milford Mill wideout and UVa commit Ugo Obasi this weekend to talk about his recent official visit to Charlottesville, the way he connects with the staff, his thoughts on possibly signing early, and what other schools are trying to elbow their way into the mix.

I know you recently took your official visit to UVa. What were some of the thoughts and questions you had going into your official?

I didn't really have many questions, honestly. I knew how Virginia was. My parents did [have questions], though. My mom did. She just wanted to really get a feel for it. She got some of a feel for it on our unofficial visit but not as much as she would like. She wanted to see how the academics were and see everything else. So it was basically for her and it felt really good to me. It still felt like home to me. It still felt like home.

What were some of your takeaways from your official visit? Is there anything you learned or saw that you hadn't before?

I learned a lot, honestly. It started with the fact that it's family first. It's family first, second, and last with them. I pretty much learned and saw that firsthand. I learned that you earn everything too. Numbers aren't given. Nothing is given.

I know the connection with Coach (Marques) Hagans was a big reason why you decided to commit to UVa this past summer. How has that relationship grown since then and what's been his message to you throughout?

From the start, he talked to me a lot about why I wanted to come to UVa. It was a very deep question and at first I didn't understand really what he was getting at, ya know? My response would be like everybody else's, like wanting to bring whatever I need to bring to the plate to play be it on offense, defense, whatever. But that wasn't what he was asking me. He wanted to know why I was playing this game and what I was playing for and who and that was real deep to me. I just told him about my parents and my mom and coming from Nigeria, it was very hard times. It was very, very hard coming from Nigeria. My mom didn't have the money to bring us here and we actually won the lottery for us to come here and having that opportunity. I talked to him about all of that. Coach Hagans and I have a great relationship.

UVa obviously took some steps forward on the field this year. How much does that help? How much does that impact sort of the way you view the program?
