CHARLOTTESVILLE - At halftime of Tuesday's game between Grambling State and No. 7 UVa, first-year guard Kyle Guy led the Tigers 14-9 as the Cavaliers rolled to a 40-point lead.
It didn't get any better from there for the visiting team.
Led by Guy's 20, the Cavaliers cruised to a 90-34 win over Grambling State in the second all-time meeting between the two schools. It was the third game in a row where UVa held an opponent below 40 points in a game, a school record in the shot-clock era.
Along with Guy's hot shooting (6-for-7 from the field, 4-for-5 from 3-point land in just 13 minutes of action), UVa also got 12 points each from Darius Thompson and Marial Shayok.
The Wahoos (4-0) held the Tigers to 23.1 percent shooting from the field for the game, a season low. And with the win, UVa's home winning streak extends to 23 games and is currently the sixth-longest streak in the nation.
The Cavaliers, who came in with the nation's best scoring defense at 40.3 points per game, only gave up nine in the first half. It was the fewest points allowed in a half this season across all of college hoops. And the 49-9 lead at the half was Virginia's largest at the break since a 43-point advantage against Grambling State in 2001, a game the Hoos went on to win 112-67.
UVa, which racked up 23 assists on 33 made baskets, forced Grambling State into 21 turnovers. In contrast, the Tigers only made 12 field goals in the game.
The Cavaliers also held Grambling State without a field goal for two brutal stretches: First from the 8:22 mark of the first half to the 18:34 mark of the second and then from the 17:12 mark to the 10:13.
The 90-34 win was the largest Virginia victory since a 60-point win over Bethune-Cookman in 1994. It was also the first time UVa has broken 90 points under Tony Bennett.
