Perrantes out following surgery

A standout guard on one of the nation's top college basketball teams will be unable to play tonight due to an appendectomy.

Where have UVa fans heard that before?

Unfortunately for No. 10 Virginia, the Cavaliers will be without junior guard London Perrantes tonight when the Wahoos face Ohio State in Columbus as part of the Big 10/ACC Challenge.

According to the school, the Los Angeles native had surgery on Sunday (November 29) and though he's out for the game against the Buckeyes, his status remains up in the air for Sautrday's home matchup with William & Mary.

Oddly enough, Virginia appears to be in a much better position to deal with this appendectomy than the Cavaliers were last March when junior guard Justin Anderson, on the heels of a fracture finger, had surgery and was delayed returning to the court by about a week.

Perrantes, averaging 10 points and 5.3 assists so far this season, will likely be replaced by a combination of sophomore guards Darius Thompson and Devon Hall. Thompson, who came to Charlottesville last season after transferring from Tennessee, started the first two games of the season alongside Perrantes and Malcolm Brogdon at guard.

With Tony Bennett electing to start Marial Shayok since, Thompson has been the team's primary backup at PG. Hall, meanwhile, will likely see his minute increase tonight since the Cavaliers won't have as many overall options at guard. And that might not be a bad thing since Hall has been pretty steady offensively thus far in 2015-2016, especially from behind the 3-point arc.

The unknown in losing Perrantes, though, comes down to how well the offense runs. So far this season, he's putting up a 4.57 assist-to-turnover ration. In fact, he's accounted for 32 of Virginia's 104 total assists on the season (31 percent).
