Multiple media outlets, including the Daily Progress and the Richmond Times-Dispatch are reporting and CavsCorner has confirmed that UVa has reached an agreement with Tony Bennett, who has spent the last three seasons heading up Washington State's program.
The 39-year-old Bennett compiled a 69-33 record with the Cougars and led his teams to a pair of NCAA tournament berths, but this past season his team finished just 17-16 and lost in the first round of the NIT.
During the 2006-07 season, Bennett led WSU to a 26-8 record and to the second round of the NCAA tournament, and he was named the Associated Press national coach of the year.
Bennett began his coaching career at Wisconsin where he coached under his father, Dick Bennett and later under current Badgers coach Bo Ryan.
When Bennett's father came out of retirement to take over the Washington State program, the younger Bennett joined him in Pullman. He also played under his father at Wisconsin-Green Bay.
During his playing days, the younger Bennett piled up nearly 2,300 points and 600 assists and he still ranks as the NCAA's all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage (49.7).
Bennett was taken by Charlotte in the second round of the 1992 NBA draft and played for three seasons before a foot injury ended his professional career.
Throughout Virginia's search for a coach, most of the attention focused on names like Minnesota's Tubby Smith and Oklahoma's Jeff Capel, which left many surprised that Bennett was the choice.
However, UVa had utilized Parker Executive Search out of Atlanata to add in its coaching search, an organization that has been a part of several surprising hires in recent years.
Terms of Bennett's new deal with Virginia are unknown at this time and an official introduction is expected to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday.
