This is the first in a series of preseason Q&A's that CavsCorner will conduct will all of UVa's assistant basketball coaches. The first is with former UVa standout Jason Williford, who is about to begin ninth year as an assistant on the staff in Charlottesville.

What are some of your takeaways from last year? What things do you feel like you guys learned about the team and the program?

From last year, after that defeat to end the season that way, I would say that we knew we needed to be a little bit better defensively on the perimeter and offensively we've got to find ways to get easier buckets. We worked to manufacture a lot of buckets and if we can create some turnovers, score quicker, easier, I think that will alleviate some of our headaches on the offensive end when shots aren't falling like in that game and a couple of others.

Was the Florida loss a game where all that can go wrong did or was it something that forced you guys to look at things differently because of the inability to score in such a big game?

I think it was a little bit of both. Obviously, there were some issues internally. There were some defections at the end of the season so there were some things that people didn't necessarily know were going on and things you were fighting. I'm not sure the unit was as close as we thought it was or as it had been in the past. But I think the Florida game, their athleticism and length and versatility, especially at the forward spots, just brought to light some of the issues that we faced and didn't necessarily show themselves as much during most of the regular season. Once we got into the postseason, it reared its head and we were sort of young and inexperienced at some of those spots. Kyle (Guy) and Ty (Jerome), in particular, were smaller and not quite as physical of versions as what we've had in the past. We struggled in that game because we got some really good looks we just didn't make shots. Mamadi (Diakite) and Jack (Salt) were both young, we didn't have Zay (Isaiah Wilkins), so we didn't have that experience. They were very physical and athletic but we didn't have the experience that we needed as well.

You move on now without London Perrantes, who was such a mainstay for you over the years. You obviously had some guys transfer, too. You come back this year not just returning those younger guys but also having three key pieces that are new to you. You've got Jay Huff and De'Andre Hunter who were here but you also get your first grad-transfer in Nigel Johnson. Is this the most unique challenge that you guys have had since maybe that Joe Harris/Akil Mitchell class?
