Four-star forward Jacob Wilkins, one of UVa's top targets in the class of 2025, took an official visit to Virginia last weekend. The younger brother of a former Virginia player turned current assistant coach, he obviously went in knowing plenty about the program. But he came away with an even deeper understanding of the Wahoos and everything they’re about.
“It was a great visit,” the 6-foot-8 wing told Cavs Corner. “I loved what I saw from the team and I really enjoyed talking with all of the coaches. I think it is a really good system that Tony Bennett has built there and of course the defense really stood out. It is a slower tempo but I think they are really effective because they are one of the better defensive teams in college basketball. I really enjoyed being there.”
Wilkins got the chance to sit down with Bennett and learn more about his message to his player and about the veteran coach a person.
“He is just telling me that there is no pressure on making my decision because he wants what is best for me,” Wilkins said. “He is a great coach and he makes sure his players are always good as he is always checking up on them. I learned much more about him this past weekend and I really enjoyed that.”
With Wilkins being the younger brother of Isaiah Wilkins, he is in a different spot than many players UVa recruits. But he was still able to learn some new things about the program during his time on Grounds.
“On this visit I really learned that just going there means a lot more than basketball,” he explained. “They are really trying to build you as a man and they push you as hard as they can. They will never let you give up because they want to see you succeed.”
Being able to be recruited by your older bro is something that Wilkins said he’s really enjoying.
“It has been really cool being able to get recruited by my brother because it is not everyday where you can play under your brother and really just be around him in a college atmosphere,” he said. “I think it is great, it is really cool.”
Given that he able to be around the team during the Blue-White scrimmage during his visit, the top takeaway he had from the experience should come as no surprise.
“The defense really stood out,” said Wilkins, ranked No. 84 overall in the class of 2025. “Their defense is incredible. The way they hedge the screens and the way they help is amazing. I feel like the defense is going to really help them win a lot of games this year. It really is insane how good the defense is.”
At this point in his recruitment, Wilkins has now his first official visit and has one more set up, which will be to his father Dominique’s alma mater Georgia. He is scheduled to start that visit later this week.
